Social Action – Tikkun Olam
“You shall love your neighbor as you do yourself.” Leviticus 19:18
Tikkun Olam means “repairing the world,” or helping to make the world a better place. It is both a guiding tenet of Judaism and a core value at JCP. The Tikkun Olam Committee was formed by a group of JCP comunity members with the express intent of finding ways for our members to give back in our community, with a special focus on helping children get involved. So far, we have established several ways for families to teach and experience the joy of volunteering and community service:
Donation of the Month – Each month we collect various items to be donated to various local charities. In the past, collected items have included groceries, coats, school supplies, cell phones, and shoes.
JUST Sandwiches – A family activity to prepare sandwiches and bagged meals to a local shelter.
Celebration Donations – Using occasions like birthdays and holidays to encourage children to donate books to less fortunate children.
We welcome your ideas and your participation. If you have areas of special expertise or relationships with service organizations, please raise your hand. If you have areas of volunteerism you would like to get involved in (hunger, toture, the environment, healthcare, etc.) please let us know. And if you would like to join our group, please contact Nathalie Rubens nrubens@nyc.rr.com.
