Our Leaders

Rabbi Jason Klein — Spiritual Leader
Rabbi Jason Klein joined JCP three years ago as the Director of our Center for Jewish Life and serves as our full time rabbi. Rabbi Jason grew up in Stuyvesant Town and Montclair, NJ before returning to New York City for college at Columbia, where he majored in religion. After receiving rabbinic ordination from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in 2002, Rabbi Jason became the spiritual leader of Congregation Beth Emeth on the South Shore of Long Island. He completed seven years of service as Executive Director with Hillel at UMBC (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) prior to joining JCP, and he recently finished his term as President of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association, a volunteer position. Rabbi Jason lives on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Jacob Stein — Music Leader
Jacob Stein has been making art and music for families for over 10 years. Jacob joined JCP in 2004, and was the creator of Bim Bom Musicfest, an early childhood music class. With a B.A. from Yale and M.F.A. in Visual Art from Columbia, Jacob comes from a very musical family. His father is a Grammy award-winning children’s musician and Cantor, his mother is a singer, and both of his brothers are professional musicians on the West Coast. They have performed together as the Rolling Steins. Jacob has worked with Jewish institutions on both coasts including Stephen Wise Free Synagogue, The Village Temple, Sutton Place Synagogue, Park Avenue Synagogue, and in Los Angeles at Temple Aliyah, Kadima Jewish Academy, and Temple Israel of Hollywood. Jacob completed his long-time tenure with JCP two years ago to pursue work with his two-time Grammy-nominated band, The Pop Ups, and we are thrilled to have him back on the bimah for the High Holidays.

Hannah Mira Friedland — Youth Program Leader
Hannah Mira grew up in the Chicago area. A graduate of Macalester College, she received her B.A. in geography and specialized in urban studies and religious studies. Hannah Mira has a background in experiential Jewish education, having taught Hebrew school at Yachad in the Minneapolis area and having served on the staff at Camp JRF (Jewish Reconstructionist Federation). In addition to her work with JCP, Hannah Mira enjoys playing viola and ice hockey, studying Talmud, and exploring public spaces.

Jeffrey Franzel — Pianist
Jeffrey Franzel is an accomplished songwriter and jazz pianist who has accompanied artists such as Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Mel Torme. He has also written hit songs for Josh Groban, Placido Domingo, Temptations, “Nsync, Dianne Reeves, Shawn Colvin, and Taylor Dayne. Jeff is a Yamaha artist and recently recorded a solo piano album at Oscar Peterson Hall in Montreal. He performs improvisation in addition to jazz and pop standards. Jeff is currently arranging an playing piano for a Billy Joel Country Tribute album featuring major country artists singing his hit songs.

Peter Sachon — Cellist
Peter Sachon is grateful to be returning to the JCP. Peter performs and records with an array of musical groups in New York City, from classical and jazz, to rock and country bands. He is very active in promoting new music of all kinds and he also writes about American orchestras. Peter has been the cellist for the Broadway productions of Fiddler on the Roof, The Light in the Piazza, High Fidelity, Legally Blonde, South Pacific, Pippin, and The King & I. He has also played for Cirque du Soleil shows: Banana Schpeel and Quidam. Peter is eagerly anticipating joining the orchestra as principal cellist of the upcoming Lincoln Center production of My Fair Lady.
