Rishonim (Sunday Class) Update Teacher Josh

November 19th, 2009

For those of you who I do not see on a regular basis on Sundays, my name is Josh Levy – and I am the K-2 Mechina teacher for our Sunday session.  Though we got off to a bit of a slower start than the students who attend during the weekdays (due to how the fall holidays fell out this year), we really have hit the ground running – and are having a great time learning, playing, singing and creating!

Each session starts with 10-15 minutes of Shira, or song time, where we sing some fun Jewish songs; and sometimes even play silly games in the process.

Then, after Shira, we move on to learning some new Jewish concept – and doing some arts and crafts project based on what we learned.  Whether it is calendar/holiday focused, like our “Jonah and the Whale”s or our Shabbat Challah covers, or focused on some of the ethics and values, like our “No Lashon Hara” door-signs – we always find a creative outlet for our learning.

Next, we move on to learning more about Ivrit, or the Hebrew language.  Recently, and in the coming months, we’re focused on the Alef-Bet, the Hebrew letters.  We learn one to two letters each week, and create our own unique pages for each letter – to be combined into Alef-Bet books to take home when we’re all done!

Finally, depending on time, we tell or read a story about something we’ve learned about and share any experiences or thoughts we have on the topic.

I, personally, am having such a great time learning with and from the students.  And I’m looking forward to a fun and learning-filled year.

Todah,

Josh
