6th and 7th Grade Girl Group: It’s a Girl Thing!

Who: Girls in the 6th and 7th grade

What:

  • Meet and have fun!
  • Form friendships!
  • Discuss media, pop-culture, influences in our lives
  • Make art and express yourself creatively!
  • Munchies

Ask questions like:

  • What does it mean to be a girl?
  • What does it mean to be a woman?
  • How does Judaism enrich our girl identities?
  • How do we encourage sisterhood and loyal friendship?

Launched nationally in 2002, almost 10,000 girls have participated in Girl Thing! groups operated by more than 300 Jewish institutions of all affiliations, across North America, including groups that are continuing to meet in the 2011-2012 program year. Click here for more information.

Our vision is that girls remain in the group throughout their middle and high school years. We hope that as the group continues to meet over the years, in most the core of the group will remain constant, although over time, some girls will leave and new girls will join.

It’s a Girl Thing! is the first Jewish program to pro-actively address two well-documented trends:

  • many girls drop out of Jewish programming after bat mitzvah
  • girls’ self-esteem drops as they enter adolescence.

It’s a Girl Thing! draws on Jewish teachings and traditions to keep girls healthy and whole—despite the aspects of popular culture that encourage risky behaviors.

Girl Thing!, a Moving Traditions program, focuses on a broader movement for girls in Jewish communities all across America.
