Sukkot is a seven day Biblical festival recalling our the Jewish people’s Exodus from Egypt. The rabbis call it the “Time of Rejoicing.” We celebrate here both our freedom and the Fall harvest; but we are also mindful of the fragility of life and its many blessings by spending time during this festival week in our Sukkot. These temporary shelters are symbolic of the dwellings our ancestors built on their wanderings between Egypt and the Land of Israel and evocative of the many people in our own city who are without shelter today.

The Five Books of Moses are the foundation texts of Jewish life. The stories, laws and traditions articulated in this holiest of books is central to our identity as a people. Tradition teaches that the Torah was dictated by God to Moses, atop Mount Sinai. But what did God want Moses to do with the Book of Books? Is meant to be the foundation of our faith or a roadmap for action, a guide to building a just world? Join JCP Executive Director Andy Bachman for a festive Sukkot argument about what it is that God wants from the Jewish people. Includes a Kosher Wine Tasting courtesy of Whole Foods Market!
