Get ready for the holidays at a Hilarious Hanukkah Happy Hour on Saturday, Dec. 3. Join the Downtown Jews (JCP’s 20s & 30s group) in enjoying a Jewish comedy show featuring up-and-coming Jewish comedians in New York City. The lineup includes Eitan Levine, Danit Sibs, Mike Greenblatt, and Willie Zabar. Danielle Brody, founder of Jews in Doodles, will host along with her Hanukkah cartoons. We’ll serve drinks and holiday treats like latkes and sufganiyot. We’ll also have Jews in Doodles products (a Jewish conversation game, a Hanukkah guidebook, and cards) available to get a head start on holiday gifts.
Every winter, when the days are short and cold, we celebrate Hanukkah, during which we commemorate the victory of the Maccabees over an oppressive regime that did not allow Jews to practice Judaism. We also celebrate the beauty of light in the darkness by telling the miraculous story of a jug of oil that was supposed to light a menorah (candelabra) for only one night but instead lasted for eight! It is customary to eat oily foods on this holiday, including latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts).
